Community Service Via Television
The Legal Assistants Division of the State Bar of Texas is proud to announce a new community service project. Through the cooperation of the El Paso Community College, two half-hour television programs per month will be taped for viewing by the public. At first the show, called ''Legally Speaking,'' will air in the El Paso market on cable television. There are plans for state-wide distribution of this program and also airing on Channel One in the public schools by the end of this year.
The Division is sponsoring this program to be hosted by Lisa Sprinkle, District 16 Director and Mr. Scott Steinberger, an attorney from El Paso. Each program will be conducted by Lisa and Scott as co-hosts interviewing two or three guests. Topics will be discussed which provide information to the public about legal issues affecting our daily lives. There are plans for programs about buying a home, buying a car, landlord-tenant disputes, the importance of a will and physicianıs directive, how to find the right attorney, the importance of legal assistants to the legal team, barratry, legal ethics, and others. It is also hoped that some shows will be taped in Spanish.
The pilot program was taped on April 4, 1996 and approved by the Division's Board of Directors at their spring board meeting in Austin on April 20, 1996. By the time of the State Bar convention in June, it is hoped that two more programs will be ready for viewing. The pilot program was entitled ''Now You are Eighteen '' and was modeled after the book published by the Texas Bar Auxiliary. The rights and responsibilities of an individual who reaches the age of legal majority were discussed. The set includes a seal of the Legal Assistants Division and is quite impressive. If you have program ideas or suggestions for speakers, please contact your District Director who will pass the information along. Look for the Division to be on your cable network later this year.
