Fun with GraphicsViola (Vi) Davis
PLS
Hello, everyone. It's time to play with WordPerfect 5.1 once again. Hopefully, you will find some of my suggestions useful in creating some original documents, invitations, or just for fun.
Much attention has been given to WP 6.0's Watermark feature. However, watermarks can be created in WP 5.1 as well.
To create a watermark, start by defining a graphics box. Press Graphics (Alt-F9), (4) User Box and (1) Create. Anchor the graphics box to the page by pressing (4) Anchor Type and (2) Page. Press (Enter) at the Number of pages to skip: prompt.
Center the watermark on the page by pressing (5) Vertical Position and (3) Center. Then press (6) Horizontal Position, (1) Margins and (3) Center. Change the size of the watermark by pressing (7) Size, (1) Set Width/Auto Height, typing 6" and pressing (Enter). Change (8) Wrap Text Around Box to (N) No.
To create the watermark, press (9) Edit. First change the font by pressing Font (Ctrl-F8), pressing (4) Base Font, highlighting the desired scalable font and pressing (Enter). When you are prompted to select a point size, type 144 and press (Enter).
Press Font (Ctrl-F8), then (5) Print Color. Press (O) Other and enter 75% for all three color values. Keep in mind that 100% is white. You may have to play with the settings a bit to get the best results from your printer.
After entering the color percentages, press Exit (F7) to return to the Graphics Editing screen. Press Center (Shift-F6) and type your initials or whatever word you want for the watermark. Press Exit (F7) twice to return to the document screen. To view the watermark, press Print (Shift-F7) and (6) View Document. Press Exit (F7) to return to the document screen.
We recently used this feature to create a watermark for our firm's fifth anniversary party by using the name of the theme as a watermark.
Another interesting trick is to create a round graphics box border and the steps are listed below:
That's all there is to it! You can size and position the graphic like any other graphic. You probably want to set the (8) Wrap Text Around Box option to (N) No so you can overlay text or other graphics. To take a peek at your creation, Press Exit (F7) when done. You will notice that it looks like a black clock, but be assured that only the round border will print.
And last, but not least...how about combining text and graphics.
The trick is to create two graphics boxes and overlap them, one on top of the other. One box contains the graphic and the other contains the text.
To do this, press Graphics (Alt-F9), (1) Figure and (1) Create. Press (1) Filename and enter the name of the graphic that you want to use. Make the necessary changes to the type, size and position that you want and press (8) Wrap Text Around Box, then answer (N) No. Press Exit (F7).
Create a second graphics box by pressing Graphics (Alt-F9), (1) Figure and (1) Create. Make the same changes to type, size and position and press (8) Wrap Text Around Box and answer (N) No. To type the text inside the box, press (9) Edit. Position the cursor where you want the text, then type it and press Exit (F7) twice.
These are just a few of the tricks that you might be able to use to create an original document either for business or for pleasure. Thanks for all of your support. I look forward to hearing from you with suggestions and/or comments.
Happy Holidays!
