State Bar Legal Assistant Committee Chair Takes a New Seat

On August 29, 2001 Texas Governor Rick Perry appointed Xavier Rodriguez, a labor lawyer with the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski (San Antonio) to the Texas Supreme Court.

Xavier Rodriguez is former Chair of the State Bar Legal Assistant Committee, and served on the committee for several years before becoming Chair.

The Legal Assistant Committee of the State Bar is appointed by the State Bar President and its members are primarily attorneys, with some legal assistants appointed as public members of the committee.

In addition,  Justice Rodriguez previously served on the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Legal Assistants (“SCOLA”)after appointment by the ABA President. In these positions, Mr. Rodriguez has attended Texas Legal Assistant Division meetings and national paralegal organization meetings.

Mr. Rodriguez graduated from Harvard in 1983 and received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1987. At the time of his appointment to the Texas Supreme Court,he practiced law at the San Antonio office of Fulbright & Jaworski. He will seek election to the Court in 2002.

An interesting note is that Mr. Rodriguez was appointed to fulfill the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by  Justice  Greg Abbott, who was a former legal assistant in Austin prior to becoming an attorney and left the Court to run for Texas Attorney General.
