2022 – 2023 Membership Renewals (Online Only) and CLE Requirements

This is notice from the Paralegal Division to all current 2022-2023 members of the Paralegal Division whose current membership expires on May 31, 2023.  The membership renewal process for the Paralegal Division is entirely online.  You will NOT receive a paper renewal form.  Beginning on May 1, 2023, and through July 31, 2023 online renewals will be available. AFTER you have completed and posted your CLE credits log into your account on the PD Website, go to MyAccount and then to Renew Online to complete your renewal.

CLE Requirements for Active or Associate Members:
If you are a current 2022-2023 Active or Associate member (membership expiring on May 31, 2023), you are required to obtain at least 6 hours of CLE, 1 hour of which must be legal ethics (2 hours can be self-study) between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023 in order to renew your 2023-2024 membership.  The Standing Rules of the Paralegal Division states that each Active and/or Associate member must obtain at least 6 CLE hours to renew membership for the following fiscal year (June 1 – May 31).  Substantive continuing legal education completed during any membership year in excess of the minimum six (6) hour requirement for such period may be applied to the following membership year’s requirement so long as the CLE was obtained in the membership year in which a person was an Active or Associate member. The carryover provision applies to one (1) year only and does not include legal ethics hours. (If you applied for membership after February 25, 2023 you DO NOT need to renew until May 31, 2024)

Tracking your Required CLE:
Renewing Active and Associate members must document required CLE PRIOR TO completing the online membership renewal application.  Log into the PD Website  at www.txpd.org then Go to MyAccount>Manage My CLE Records.  Once you have added your CLE go back to Go to MyAccount>Renew Online!

Qualifying CLE:
The Paralegal Division will accept substantive law CLE presented or approved by the MCLE Department of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, the National Association of Legal Assistants, the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, and/or presented by the Paralegal Division, local bar associations, paralegal associations, or law firms for credit towards the Paralegal Division’s mandatory membership renewal CLE requirement.

If the CLE course is not accredited by any of the above-referenced groups, the Division will accept a seminar, if it is a substantive law course offered by a qualified presenter that would qualify for approval if submitted to one of the above organizations.  “Substantive Law Course” means an organized program of legal education dealing with: 1) substantive or procedural subjects of law; 2) legal skills and techniques; 3) legal ethics and/or legal professional responsibility; or 4) alternative dispute resolution.  Additionally, law office management programs accredited by the State Bar of Texas will be accepted.

If the requested CLE hours are in connection with auditing or attending a substantive law class, the CLE hours allowed shall be limited to the number of semester hours (usually a three-hour course) rather than the number of clock hours attended.
